Nigel Barnes

Nigel leads the 'Telecare Group' within the PICT research centre. The group's focus is on the application of pervasive monitoring and the development of data analysis techniques to enable advanced Telecare and eHealth solutions.

Telecare means the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to support independent living for older, frail and disabled people.

Nigel has been involved in Telecare research since 1996 from BT's first Telecare research trials with the Anchor Trust (1996-1999). Since then he has led the following Telecare research activities:

  • Millennium Homes - a collaborative UK Government (DTI) supported project (2000-2003)
  • BT's ongoing Telecare Pilot in collaboration with Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Direct Limited (2002-)
  • SAPHE: Smart and Aware Pervasive Healthcare Environment - a collaborative UK Government supported project (2006-)

Nigel joined BT as an apprentice technician in 1986. Following his apprenticeship he has involved in developing advanced opto-electronic processing and interconnect demonstrators as part of both BT internal research and European collaborative projects. In 1991 Nigel took special leave to undertake a BEng(hons) degree in Communication Engineering at the University of Kent at Canterbury, achieving a first class degree in 1994. Nigel has also attained a Masters degree in Telecommunications from the University of London in 1999. Nigel is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) through the IET (formerly the IEE).
