Dave Heatley

Dave is presently the Chief Technologist with the Pervasive ICT Research Centre. He is exploring how the ever increasing pervasiveness of ICT and ubiquitous wireless connectivity can be exploited to create compelling new business opportunities in key sectors such as health care.

He brings some 25 years of experience in telecom research to the position, during which he has held senior positions in developing tele-medical systems, sensor networks, intelligent workspace technologies, wireless (radio and infrared) systems, optical fibre systems, and other areas. He is an acknowledged authority in these fields and is frequently called upon to deliver consultancy.

Dave spent a period of secondment at Microwave Photonics Inc as Vice President R&D, with the task of developing the core R&D part of the business and taking charge of the development of early product demonstrators.

During his career with BT Dave has received a number of awards in recognition of his research and management, which includes the Queen's Award for Technology which he shared with colleagues. He has published widely and is accredited with several patents.

Dave received his PhD in Optical Fibre Telecommunication Systems in 1989 from the University of Essex. Prior to that he received his MSc in Telecommunications in 1981 and he graduated with 1st class honours for his BSc in Electronic Engineering in 1978, also receiving an IEE award for the highest placed graduate. He became a member of the IEE in 1984 and received his Chartered Engineer in the same year.
