Adaptive Security

Security in modern enterprises still depends largely on impregnable firewalls and centralised monitoring to detect the anomalous conditions which might indicate system vulnerabilities.

Unfortunately, this approach is becoming rapidly outdated and outperformed by applications which can intentionally or unintentionally breach the firewall, leaving the entire network vulnerable to exploitation and attack.

Innovative approaches to adaptive firewalling are under investigation, which may lead to a more robust security infrastructure for all corporate networks. Essentially, each individual machine is autonomous, maintaining its own perspective on the other machines which it will trust or mistrust, given available evidence.

In this way, no individual breach will make the entire system vulnerable. This mature approach to firewalling is also more appropriate for expected increases in virtual enterprises, in which users participating in an information network may not be co-located, or share common support infrastructure.
