Rowan Limb

Rowan is a senior researcher in the Pervasive ICT Research Centre. His research interests include pervasive information architectures and smart home technologies. In this context he has previously worked on 'Managing the Digital Home' and 'Pervasive Home Environment Networks (PHEN)' and is currently developing new smart home concepts using Java, XML, UPnP? and OSGi. He is an experienced researcher with over 20 years background in technology and telecom research. He has an excellent track record ranging from developing concepts and long term ideas through to more short term market analysis and prototype development.

Rowan has presented and demonstrated technology at numerous events and exhibitions including organising and delivering an extensive range of Internet based demonstrators at Telecom 95 in Geneva when the Internet was new to many of BT's business customers.

In the early 1990's, with a background in electronic test and diagnosis, Rowan developed a system which demonstrated using neural networks to diagnose System X line cards. This led to a number of research projects using machine learning techniques.

As the Internet became more prevalent in the mid to late 1990s Rowan became part of a team which pioneered much of the early exposure of the World Wide Web and Internet applications within BT and was part of a team which developed and presented a course to BT marketing people on what the Internet was and potential business benefits for BT.

Rowan graduated from Liverpool University in 1981 with an honours degree in Physics. After graduating, he started working for BT in London then moved to BT Laboratories (now Adastral Park) in 1984. He is a member of the British Computer Society, Chartered Engineer and Chartered IT Professional.
