Automated Design and Specification
Engineers can specify the parameters of a design, and the means of assessing candidate designs against a range of functional criteria. However, in some cases it is impossible to use brute force exhaustive search or analytical tools to identify the optimal design based on this information.
Automated design processes, such as evolutionary computation are valuable in these situations. They permit the human designer to specify the design requirements, without specifying how they should be satisfied. They allow the space of possible designs to be explored in order to find a highly optimised solution.
This technology is already applied within the group to network design for the lines of business. Ongoing development will enable the evolutionary computation to be applied to real-time optimisation, making these tools accessible for everyday use by decision makers within the enterprise.
